The 2.3-liter EcoBoost four is the starting point and it is no penalty box: 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft, paired to a 10-speed automatic. Move up and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 brings 415 lb-ft, standard on the ST, available on Tremor and newly orderable on Platinum for 2027. Ford quotes the V6 at up to 400 horsepower, dropping to 385 in states that follow California emissions standards.

Rear-wheel drive is the base layout on Active, ST-Line, Platinum and ST, with Intelligent 4WD available across those trims. Tremor is 4WD only, which suits its role. Each model offers six drive modes, and depending on the build that includes either a Trail or an Off-Road setting alongside Tow/Haul and Slippery.

Explorer Trims and Configurations

At 198.7 inches long on a 119.1-inch wheelbase, the Explorer is a full three-row without feeling oversized on a two-lane road. Tremor is the one that looks the part out here, with its off-road hardware and standard four-wheel drive, while ST wears the most aggressive bodywork in the range.

Two paint colors are new for 2027, Avalanche Gray and Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. The ST adds the available Sinister Package, which adds an exclusive wheel design and amber accent lights, and several models can delete the roof rails with the Slick Roof Conversion.

Ford Co-Pilot360 comes standard on every 2027 Explorer, covering automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information with cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping system and a rear view camera. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go arrives with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+, which Ford lists as standard on the Explorer, while a 360-degree camera comes further up the range.

The IIHS gave the 2026 Explorer a Top Safety Pick award, and NHTSA gave the 2025 Explorer five stars overall. Neither has rated the 2027 yet, so those results describe the most recent model years rather than this one.

A 13.2-inch center touchscreen running Ford Digital Experience is standard, as is the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto need no cable, the system accepts over-the-air updates, and a 5G modem runs the onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

BlueCruise hands-free highway driving comes equipped on Platinum and ST with a complimentary plan included, and is available elsewhere in the lineup. It operates on prequalified divided highways and still expects your eyes on the road. The Ford Security Package is included for the first year on 2027 models.

For 2027 second-row captain’s chairs are standard, making six seats the default and seven an option by way of the available bench. Tremor seats six and does not offer the bench. Fold the second and third rows and cargo space opens up to 85.8 cubic feet, which covers a Costco run to Boise with room left over.

Materials climb steadily through the range, from Active’s hard-wearing cloth to ST-Line’s sportier treatment and Platinum’s quilted leather. Every model can now be optioned with the panoramic Vista Roof and its power shade.
